General elections in South Africa. The Herenigde Nasionale Party (Re-united National Party) comes to power in coalition with the Afrikaner Party led by Mr. Nicholaas C. Havenga, who is made finance minister. The HNP wins the election by five seats and Dr Malan becomes premier at the age of seventy-four. The Herenigde Nasionale Party and the Afrikaner Party merged in 1951 to become the National Party.
