On 24 August 1960, The Star newspaper reported that the new Police Commissioner, Lt. Gen. H.J. du Plooy would take disciplinary action against White policeman who referred to Africans as “Kaffir”.In an interview with ‘World’, a non-White newspaper, du Plooy said that his policy on Africans was one of “leniency and extreme tolerance.”
