Edoardo Villa was born on 31 May 1920 in Bergamo. As a child Villa spent a great deal of time with his uncle who was a stonemason. He studied sculpture under Minotti, Barbieri and Lodi at the Scuolo d\'Arte Andrea Fantoni in Bergamo. He also studied in Milan and Rome. With the outbreak of the Second World War he was conscripted into the Italian army, wounded in the North African campaign, captured by the Allied forces and interned in Egypt before being sent to SA to Sonderwater in the Transvaal in 1942. During this time he continued to make sculpture.
