In 1967 the minister of justice announced that a detainee had died in detention in 1966,but did not mention the detainee's name.In 1970,in parliament the minister of police said that Mr Hangula Shonyela had committed suicide on 9th October 1966 at the Pretoria prison after being detained on 30 August 1966.

He had been detained under the 180-day clause.In reply to a question put to him before parliament on 29 March 1983 on Mr Shonyeka's detention,the minister of law and order said that Mr Shonyeka was the same person as Mr Hamakwayo.
