The African National Congress welcomes the Western Cape Farming Sector Engagement initiative by the national government today in Paarl, Western Cape. This initiate seeks to address persisting problems of farm evictions, working conditions and the previous initiatives that sought to address farm workers problems.

The meeting that was Chaired by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and attended by Ministers; Gordhan, Zokwana, Masutha, Deputy Minister Kota and MEC for Human Settlement in the Western Cape, underscores the commitment and urgency of resolving farm workers problems. The ANC is happy that representatives of various farmers organizations and unions were invited and participated in the discussions.

We note and welcome the outcome of the initiative of calling for moratorium on evictions of farm workers by farmers. This will allow negotiations between the farmers organisations and unions to proceed smoothly. We believe that the outcome of this engagement will assist in expediting the process of finding lasting solutions and improving conditions in farming communities.
