23 June 1956
On 23 June 1956 General Gamal Abdel Nasser was officially elected President of Egypt. He had been the effective leader of Egypt since 14 November 1954 as the Chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council. Nasser is seen as one of the most significant political figures in Egyptian history. He was well-known for his Arab nationalist and anti-colonial foreign policy. He is still seen by many throughout the Arab World as a symbol of Arab dignity and freedom. A number of his policies were a response to occupying the post-colonial space that invited reliance on Arab values, Arab ideas and Arab resolutions to national challenges. He remained President until his death in 1970.
