A published and a principal figure in the Afrikaner Bond. However as a political moderate, he worked closely with Rhodes until the Jameson Raid that severed ties between Afrikaners and the Britons. Hofmeyr played peacemaker during the build up to the Anglo-Boer War and also tried to moderate Milner's demands on Kriger. After the war he devoted himself to Afrikaner cultural interests and a federal approach to the newly formed union.
