In January 2010, against the backdrop of the 2010 African Soccer World Cup, SAHO invited documentary photographers to submit essays on how they have viewed South Africa and the continent over the last three years. Whilst some of us are familiar with the dedication and commitment of the country’s small but highly talented group of documentary photographers, we were amazed by the work that began to stream in from young photographers working bravely at the coal face of history. Fifty eight photographers and a group of community photographers, Iliso Labantu, responded to our call to submit essays to the Bonani Africa 2010 Festival of Photography. Some photographers submitted more than one essay, resulting in sixty four essays being show-cased at the exhibition.
