The South African national football team Bafana Bafana, under tutelage of the hastily appointed caretaker coach Jomo Sono, lost 2-0 against their Egyptian opponents in the final of the Africa biannual soccer spectacle, Africa Cup of Nations, staged in Burkina Faso. The game was played in front of 50 000 spectators at the 4th August stadium, Ouagadougou. This was South Africa's second appearance in this continental competition after winning the previous one on their home soil in 1996. Despite suffering a defeat, South Africa attained runners up position and a silver medal.
