The first weather forecast for the Union is issued

After amalgamation of the weather services of the four provinces on 1 April 1912, the first weather forecast for the Union of South Africa as a whole was issued by A.G. Howard of the Union Weather Service from the branch office in Cape Town a few days later. The forecasting service was moved to Pretoria in 1926 and housed on the veranda of the weather office at 271 Schoeman Street. During the Second International Polar Year Project (1 August 1932-31 August 1933) the UWS rendered valuable assistance in simultaneous meteorological observations from a network of stations undertaken on an international basis.
