On 1 June 2002 the former South African Cricket Captain, Hansie Cronje, died along with two pilots in a Hawker Siddeley 748 - 372 aircraft which crashed into the Outeniqua Mountains in the Southern Cape.
Cronje was on his way home (Fancourt Estate) when he missed his scheduled flight at an Airport in Johannesburg on the evening of 31 May 2002.
Before he met with his untimely death, his cricket career was under spotlight as he was alleged to have been involved in match fixing.
Cronje was born as Wessel Johannes Cronje in Bloemfontein on 25 September 1969. He made his Test debut for South Africa against the West Indies in March 1992. That match was South Africa’s first five-day game after the country was readmitted into the International Cricket Board.
