On 16 September 1902 Maude Francis Eyston Sumner, SA painter, who lived, worked and exhibited in SA, England and France, was born in Johannesburg. Born in 1902 in Johannesburg, South Africa, Maud Sumner lived in South Africa, London, England, and Paris France.  She died in 1985 in Johannesburg. Sumner completed a Masters in Literature at Oxford University in 1925, and studied at the Westminster School of Art in London from 1926-32.  Until 1938 she studied in Paris under Naum Aronson, George DevalliÁƒÂƒÂ¨res, Maurice Denis and Roger BissiÁƒÂƒÂ¨res.  She returned to South Africa shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War. She is well known as a painter of landscapes and still lives. Her paintings are sought after by collectors.
