29 April 1977
Journalist, anti-apartheid activist, and Director of Publicity of the African National Congress (ANC) External Mission, Marimuthu Pragalathan Naicker (M.P.) died at the age of 56 from a suspected heart failure en route on a flight from London to Berlin. At the time of his death Naicker was also a journalist for the ANC journal Sechaba. He died while on a mission on behalf of the liberation struggle abroad. Leaders and militants, friends and family gathered from all parts of the world at the Golders Green Crematorium in London on May 8 to say a last farewell to Naicker. The crowd, which overflowed from the building into the courtyard, heard tributes from the Acting President of the ANC, Oliver Tambo, the Chairman of the South African Communist Party (SACP), Dr. Yusuf Dadoo and Comrade Brian Bunting. The ANC choir sang Nkosi Sikelel'i Afrika at Naicker's flag-draped coffin.
