Roome was born in Pietersburg, Northern Province. He studied at Rhodes University and obtained a BA(FA) in 1974 and an MA(FA) in 1975.
Roome then became a lecturer in painting and history of art at Rhodes University. Currently he teaches painting at the Technikon Natal.
He set up a papermaking unit at the Technikon Natal. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in SA. He is represented in public and private collections in SA and abroad.
