Sebokeng Township, Johannesburg

Sebokeng is a middle-class Township in Southern Gauteng. Very near the Industrial Cities of Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging. It falls in the Region of the Sedibeng District Municipality. It was established during apartheid and witnessed major rent boycotts in 1984. This saw radical fighting which only ended in 1994. Which then allowed for much needed, community building.  Name means "gathering place" in Sesotho.

Sebokeng reflects the complex realities of many South African townships, balancing development and aspiration with persistent social and infrastructural challenges. There are different zones especially, each with there own complex problems. Like: '6, 10, 14' are the zones with severe, service backlogs. This is including sanitation and housing.
