Conclusion
The exhibition and catalogue essay have illustrated the enormous diversity of creative activity that has taken place through a process of cultural and economic interchange. They have attempted to show the many different art forms that have been explored by black artists during the past six decades. In some cases many years of creative struggle have only received a summary treatment. The specific artworks on exhibition have hardly been discussed or interpreted and the particular changes within individual artists as well as their personal contributions to the history have yet to be researched and recorded. It is hoped that this catalogue, with its many illustrations, summary biographies and extensive bibliography, will assist future researchers as they begin to offer more detailed and complex explorations of the history of twentieth century South African art.
