NATAL INDIAN CONGRESS ELECTIONS

WHAT IS THE CONGRESS ELECTION COMMITTEE?

It is a body of men of all sections of the Indian Community - the Workers, the Farmers the Merchants, the petty Storekeepers - who have come together for the purpose of creating a congress of all Indians for all Indians.

What does It Stand For?

Food

Housing

Work for all South Africa Citizenship

What is the Anti-Segregation Council?

It is a body of men, some of them communists, some of them Trade Unionists, some of them members of the present Congress Committee and Congress Executive who were defeated in v ari ous decisions of Congress arrived at democratically, and who, dissatisfied, formed an opposition body working on parallel lines to the Congress while at the same time remaining members of the Congress Committee and Executive.

What is the difference between the two?

IT IS THIS: -

The Anti-Segregationists, led by Communists, who are Communists first and Indians second, say -

1. Indians must unite with the Non-European Unity Movement in a militant struggle and in a policy that the Natal Indian Congress has not been asked to formulate.

2. Indians must demand the franchise for Africans, Coloureds and Indians or nothing.

•  Indians must repudiate the policy of progress based on constitutional negotiations.

The first of these would be to hand over Indian affairs to NON-INDIANS for decision. This would mean that the Indians would lose their separate identity-an identity which we have consistently guarded since Mahatma Gandhi's time.

The second and third must be determined in the circumstances of time and place, by the force at our disposal. It is easy to shout for a list of high-sounding "demands," but useless and irresponsible to do so unless account is fully taken of the methods by which demands are to be attained. By no stretch of imagination can the meetings at the Red Square be called a militant struggle.

Do you honestly think-

1. That the Government will give all Non-Europeans over 21 years the vote on the common roll and the right to sit in Parliament, in Provincial Councils, and in City Councils - ALL AT ONCE - j ust when the Anti-Segregation ask for it ?

2. That we should j oin the Non-European Unity Movement and accept policies and terms laid down for us by others without having been consulted?
