WHAT LEAD UP TO THE SPLIT?

The composition of and dissatisfaction in the officials of the Non-European United
Front.
1. Mr J A La Guma the General Secretary of the N.L.L. at the time was proposed as
Secretary of the N.E.U.F. but declined the position
2. The General Council of the N.L.L instructed Dr G H Gool its representative on the
Committee of Action of the N.E.U.F to move a joint secretariat be formed
consisting of Messrs La Guma, Kontane28 and Pilsania. This was not done by the
representative.

HOW THE SPLIT OCCURRED

1. The annual Conference of the League was attended by 69 delegates from 15
Branches, affiliated bodies and members of the G.C.
2. The credentials of the delegates were examined and found in order my Mr J A
La Guma in his capacity as G.S.
3. The Constitution of the League reads "That the LEADERSHIP of the N.L.L. must
always be predominantly Non-European."
Mr La Guma moved on behalf of a section of the Cape Town Branch
(Approximately 50 out of 700) the following resolution
BUT after moving the resolution Mr La Guma stated that "11 his
resolution was not accepted he was not prepared to carry on"

The resolution was as follows "That whilst Europeans could be members
of the organisation they would not be allowed to hold any official
position"
4. The motion was lost by an overwhelming majority. Later seven or 8 members
walked out including Mr La Guma.
5. The Question is,
Is the Organisation to be the will of the majority of the people or is it going to be
run by individuals.

The Nett Results

1. These members who walked out in Conference have been asked to explain their
actions to the Governing Body of the League i.e. the General Council. They have
refused to do so and have been expelled.
2. These members of the Capetown Branch who have disobeyed instructions of the
G.C and who were asked to explain their actions and have refused to do so have
been expelled.
3. The National Liberation League of S.A. is growing day by day, stronger and
stronger and is more determined than ever to fight for the principles for which it
stands.
4. It has now 21 BRANCHES and a membership of at least 4000.
5. The African People are with us and have formed a real fighting Branch at Langa.
6. With our slogan of Unite to Fight we are going forward.
A MEETING OF THE MEMBERS OF THE CAPETOWN BRANCH WILL BE
HELD ON 11th THURSDAY EVENING IN THE COSMOPOLITAN HALL PON-
TAC STREET AT 8 P.M. AGENDA. I Future activities of the Capetown Branch.
