Location: back to this day in history search archive   An estimated 60,000 delegates and heads of government from over 170 countries gathered for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg at the Sandton Convention Centre. The summit began on 26 August and ended on 4 September 2002 was organized by the United Nations and was aimed at finding ways to strike a balance between economic development and environmental sustainability. The summit is held every 10 years, so the one held in Johannesburg was a review and a follow up the resolutions that were adopted in the summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
