This Day in History: 4 December 1893
Trade union leader, politician and businessman, Allison Wessels George (Mhlongo) Champion, was born at Sans Souci Mission Station at Nonyeke, near Groutville, Stanger district in Natal. He assumed the full-time secretary position of the Transvaal branch of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) when it relocated its headquarters from Cape Town to Johannesburg. During the term of office of J.T. Gumede, Champion became an executive member of the African National Congress (ANC).
