13 August 1970
On 13 August 1970, pamphlet bombs which scattered revolutionary African National Congress (ANC) propaganda leaflets exploded in Cape Town and in Johannesburg.  Similar occurrences were also reported in Durban and Port Elizabeth. In Port Elizabeth, a dustbin filled with ANC revolutionary propaganda leaflets was found by a member of the public. At the Grand Parade, Cape Town, an explosion sent hundreds of ANC pamphlets into the air during rush-hour.  Amid these explosions, a tape recorder with ANC slogans was found by security police at the Parade. In Johannesburg, pamphlets were discovered outside the Rand Daily Mail building. During an interview with Cape Times Police Commissioner General J.P. Gous, said that “it is almost certain Whites are behind the series of pamphlet-bomb explosions that distributed ANC propaganda in several major South African centres last week.”
