Cheryl Carolus is born

Date: 20 April, 1959

Former South African High Commissioner in London, political activist and Chief Executive Officer of Tourism South Africa, Cheryl Carolus, was born in Silvertown, on the Cape Flats. At school, Carolus was an active member of the South African Students' Organisation (SASO). She was one of the founding members of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in 1983 and served as the General Secretary of the Federation of South African Women (Fedsaw) from 1987. She was arrested several times and often harassed for her political beliefs. Carolus played a crucial role during the Groote Schuur negotiations, where she was part of the African National Congress (ANC) delegation that met with the government.
