Dr Joosub Hajee Suliman Ebrahim, recipient of the Order for Meritorious Service Class 1: Gold from the state president in 1992, for his contribution as businessman, philanthropist and humanitarian, was born in Pretoria. He has received several other awards and medals, as well as a Doctor of Education (honoris causa) degree, conferred by the University of South Africa, in recognition of his keen interest and deep involvement in tertiary and post-graduate studies. He was made an honorary life member of the Wits Medical Graduates Association in 1986. Ebrahim, who had dedicated his life to the upliftment of the underprivileged, has been the recipient of numerous honours for his exceptional contributions in the areas of the health sciences, social welfare, education and culture in South Africa, Pakistan, India and Ireland.
