10 May 1998
After a month-long controversy including charges of racism, nepotism and mismanagement in the sport. On Thursday 7 May, South African Rugby Football Union (SARFU) s executive committee voted informally 22 - 15 requesting that Dr Louis Luyt step down as the president, but he refused to do so. The followed up announcement was made by the National Sports Council. The Council called for Luyt's resignation, along with the entire SARFU executive. It further threatened to initiate a boycott of international rugby unless they did so by May 7. On Sunday, 10 May 1998, Luyt resigned from his position and cited three reasons for his resignation. He could not work with an executive that did not support him.He did not want to hurt rugby, and He did not want to let down South Africa's rugby partners, Australia and New Zealand.
