Britain's GlaxoSmithKline PLC, the world's largest producer of AIDS drugs, announced it would reduce the price of its popular AIDS medication. Combivir, a leading AIDS combination therapy, will drop from $1.70 to 90 cents a day. Epivir, also called 3TC, will drop from 64 cents to 35 cents a day, and Retrovir, known as AZT, will drop from $1.20 to 75 cents a day in sixty-three developing countries, including sub-Saharan Africa. The price reductions were made possible by improvements in manufacturing, according to Glaxo. The world's biggest maker of HIV drugs has significant operations in the Philadelphia area.
