Date: 10 March, 1988
The Weekly Mail reported that former national chairman of the African National Congress (ANC), Govan Mbeki, was refused a passport in March to visit his three children in exile. Govan Mbeki was the father of the current president Thabo Mbeki and was one of the original anti-apartheid campaigners. The South African department of home affairs said in January 1989 that an increased number of applications for passports had been turned down during 1988 - 210 in total.
