The League of Nations was established after World War I, during the Treaty of Versailles. The intention of this organization was to reduce armament and to maintain peace and stability between countries. Gen. Jan Smuts and Gen. Louis Botha were the two representatives of the Union of South Africa. Smuts also played an important role in the drafting of the Covenant of the League. Most countries from Africa, Asia and Europe signed the treaty, with countries like Russia and the USA joining the organization at a later stage. References: Wallis, F. (2000).
