Date: 23 August, 1933

Mahatma Gandhi was released from jail in the Indian town of Poona following yet another hunger strike, this one started on 16 August. He had been arrested along with thirty-four members of his ashram and was sentenced to one year's imprisonment on his refusal to leave Yeranda village for Poona. He embarked on a hunger strike to highlight the plight of the "untouchables" in India, but was unconditionally released by the authorities because the strike nearly cost him his life.
