Mandela and Tshwete go to Constitutional Court
Mandela Nelson
Date: 2 December, 1998
President Nelson Mandela and the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Steve Tshwete, were granted leave to appeal to the Constitutional Court against the verdict passed by Justice William de Villiers to set aside the appointment of a judicial commission into the South African Rugby Football Union (SARFU) affairs. The Union, under its president Louis Luyt, had taken Tshwete to court after he had appointed the Commission of Inquiry into rugby affairs. Mandela was called as a witness to justify the appointment of the commission as it was alleged that he had sanctioned its appointment.
