Natal Football Union founded

The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and the subsequent war with the South African Republics brought a new influx of Whites to South Africa, many of whom were soccer enthusiasts. Together with the local people they started arranging teams and soccer matches against one another. This co-operation on the sports-field became more structured in 1882 with the formation of the Natal Football Union (NFU), comprising both the local Black people and the newer White arrivals. Five teams founded this first Union, and the NFU is credited with the start of football development in this country.
