About 100 people were declared dead as a result of the political violence that continued in KwaZulu-Natal. The political violence rages on in spite of the deployment of more than 3,000 members of the South African Defence Force (SADF) to enforce the state of emergency in the province. The willingness and ability of the SADF members to execute their defensive mandate remained in doubt as about 15,000 armed Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) members were allowed to march through Empangeni.
