South African author and translator of books into Afrikaans from six European languages, Hymne Weiss, was born on the farm Goedemoed, Rouxville district, Orange Free State (now Free State). She was a daughter of Jozua Francois Naude and Johanna Zondagh Van Huyssteen. Weiss attended school at Roodepoort, Piet Retief and Graaff-Reinet from 1916 until 1928, and was awarded a grant by the Graaff-Reinet City Council for attaining the highest marks in her standard 8 (grade 10) examination at Hoër Volkskool. Weiss attained A Grades in all her Matriculation subjects and went on to study at Stellendbosch University, where she earned a BA cum laude in 1932; an MA: Afrikaans-Netherlands cum laude (1933); as well as a seniour education dimploma cum laude (1934). Apart from her stellar academic achievements, Weiss participated in various sporting activities which included tennis and bastketball. She also pursued musical interests, and played pinao & the cello, as well as participating as a member of the Hoër Volkskool Orchestra.
