24 January 1997
Three prominent Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leaders, Frank Mdlalose, national chairperson and premier of Kwazulu-Natal province, Ziba Jiyane, Secretary-General and Musi Myeni, leader in the Gauteng provincial legislature, resigned from the party. All three were accused of being moderates who favoured compromise. Their resignation during a fifteen-hour meeting of the IFP's national council followed reports of tensions with Inkatha President Chief Buthelezi.
