The national leader of the Democratic Alliance - Tony Leon was born in Durban. In 1994 he was elected Member of Parliament and leader of Democratic Party. He succeeded Zech De Beer as the leader of the DP. He led the Party until it merged into Democratic Alliance with the New National Party. After the merger Tony Leon was elected the leader of the newly formed D A. The merger occurred immediately after the second South Africa national democratic elections in 1999. These parties agreed to contest 2000 local elections under the banner of the Democratic Alliance. D A is the current official opposition in the National Assembly.
