Barend Erasmus, a noted trade unionist, worked for the Johannesburg Municipal Transport Service (JMTS). While at the JMTS, he became involved with the affairs of the Johannesburg Municipal Transport Workers' Union and was elected to the executive committee of the union. He served in several influential positions in different trade unions. Passionate about sport, Erasmus founded the Johannesburg Municipal Sports Club. He was a member of South African Council of Transport Workers and the Special Tribunal, which dealt with disciplinary measures of the Johannesburg Municipal Sports Club. He died in Johannesburg in 1973. The cause of his death was not disclosed.
