24 March 1991
Twelve people, including a police officer and two children, were killed in the eastern Rand township of Daveyton, near Benoni. The incident, which was followed by a barrage of criticism, prompted the government to institute a judicial inquiry. Police alleged that they were forced to open fire when the crowd attacked them, while the African National Congress (ANC) claimed that its supporters were shot at by police while defending themselves against Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) supporters' attacks.
