IT'S NEVER TOO EARLY

First National Bank (FNB) is proud to have been able to play a role in the publication of this magnificent book, It’s Never Too Early: African Art and Craft in Kabuli Natal 1960-1990. It is a worthy tribute to Jo Thorpe and the invaluable contribution she made to art and craft in the province and the country as a whole.

FNB has committed itself to promoting the development of ethnic and contemporary art in South Africa and. like Jo, believes that there is a wealth of talent in local communities that deserves to be given public exposure and recognition.

Jo Thorpe was a woman ahead of her time. She not only helped many individuals in their personal struggles, but also gave herself to the whole of society in its striving towards unity and harmony. FNB salutes such rare visionaries who have the courage and perseverance to follow a dream to its fulfillment.

We see this book, which spans three decades, as containing far more than a fragment of history, for art and craft, like legend, tell a deeper tale. Art is the profound expression of a people's spiritual development: it captures their essence as they flow with the current of time and change. FNB believes that art, reaching beyond the limitations of language, is one of the most powerful means of communication. Appreciation of other people's art and craft is the first step to a true understanding of their culture, their being.

FNB wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Jo Thorpe. She leaves us with a priceless legacy - not just the rich store of African art and craft that she collected throughout her life, but also her own story. Her commitment and dedication in working undaunted for what she believed in, is an inspiration for others, and her collection tells of a deep love of people in all their vibrant diversity.
