The London Times, a British newspaper based in London, published an article paying tribute to King Sekhukhune of the Marota Empire, commonly known as the Bapedi kingdom. The London Times paid tribute to King Sekhukhune for being a courageous and brave leader during “savage” periods in Southern Africa. The newspaper acknowledged the successes of Sekhukhune in resisting attempts by the Boer republic to annex his kingdom. In October 1982, ‘Sechaba', a news journal of the African National Congress paid tribute to King Sekhukhune by writing his biography and appealed to South Africans to be more like King Sekhukhune and resist apartheid with the same spirit as his resistance to colonialism.
