"To All Africans and Friends of Justice." Flyer issued by Dr. A.B. Xuma, March 21, 1947
TO ALL AFRICANS AND FRIENDS OF JUSTICE.
The Africans are the underdog of all underdogs in South Africa. The discriminations and restrictions as well as humiliations against them should challenge them to rise as one man in a campaign to remove all their disabilities. All other races and national groups with their friends are moving on fighting for their freedom. The time has now come that all self-respecting Africans—men & women must join in the struggle for their own liberation. All liberty loving people, men and women of good-will of [all] races must join in this struggle. Here is a minimum programme on which you must organise and educate public opinion.
(1) Removal of political Colour Bar in South Africa and direct representation of Africans in all legislative bodies—National, Provincial and Municipal.
(2) Abolition of the Pass Laws
(3) Removal of Land Restrictions against Africans in urban and rural areas.
(4) Recognition of African Trade Unions under the Industrial Conciliation Act and adequate wages for African workers.
(5) Adequate Housing facilities for Africans and adequate mass training facilities for Africans as Builders and in other trades with outlets for employment as skilled workers.
(6) Extension of the system of free compulsory Education to all African children of school going age.
(7) The re-establishment of the Status of the African chief in our national affairs.
Organise mass meetings in your areas and solicit the co-operation of all local organisations and people in the campaign. If you are intelligent enough to realize that racial and colour discrimination and domination undermine our progress and well-being, you must join the struggle and play your part. Remember! Talkers don't work, and workers don't talk.
Your friends in South Africa; your friends abroad and among the United Nations are watching your conditions and struggles with intelligent interest. If you do not take the campaign vigorously and seriously you will have failed yourselves, your children and your friends all over the world.
