Born
in 1910 in Roodepoort Hodgson began working in mines in 1923 at the age
of 13. In the late 1920s he helped to organize the Northern Rhodesian Mine
Workers' Union. He fought in World War II and was the first national secretary
of the Springbok Legion. He was also the first national secretary of the
Congress of Democrats. A member of the Communist Party, he was banned in
1953 but continued to act as business manager of Liberation.
He was one of the accused in the Treason Trial, and was later involved in Umkhonto We Sizwe. His wife Rica was also prominent in the Congress of Democrats and was served with several banning orders. The Hodgsons left South Africa secretly in mid-1963. From Protest To Challenge, Political Profiles Volume 4, P37
