When a young swiss veterinarian, Arnold Theiler, set foot on African soil at Cape Town in 1891, he could not have known that he was destined to change the course of history in his adopted country. By conquering animal diseases he would stimulate its economic development and by example he would establish a culture of dedicated scientific research.
