After living for some time in Orlando Township, Johannesburg, Barney William Ngakane moved to Springs, where he served as chairman of a Liberal Party branch in the early 1960s. In December 1960 he acted as chairman at the consultative conference of African leaders held in Johannesburg. A field secretary for the Institute of Race Relations in the early 1950s, he has more recently worked for the Christian Institute.
