Benjamin M. Kies was a prominent Coloured political figure and a founder of the Anti-Coloured Affairs Department (CAD) movement and the Non-European Unity Movement (NEUM). He was born in Cape Town in 1917, the son of a factory worker. He obtained B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Cape Town, then taught for many years and edited the journal of the Teachers' League of South Africa. He was fired from his teaching post in 1956 because of his political views, and he took up the study of law. He is now an advocate in Cape Town.
