Frank Mdlalose was born on 29 November 1931 at Nqutu, the son of Tabitha Mthembu, a teacher, and Jaconiah Zwelabo Mdlalose, a general dealer. He attended local primary schools in Nqutu from 1937 to 1942, entering the Polela Institution before attending St Francis High School, Mariannhill, where he matriculated in 1949. Between 1950 and 1952, he studied for a BSc degree at the University of Fort Hare, Alice, and completed his University Education Diploma in 1953.
