Born Riversdale District, Cape,1853, died Riversdale, died 1936. Berman refers to Volschenk as a "practised amateur", but acknowledges his important role in fostering an appreciation of art in SA (1983:478- 9). His first contact with like-minded artists pre-dates SASA's inception considerably. In 1879 he made contact with the SAFAA in Cape Town from Riversdale, and later exhibited with them. Much later, in 1893, he was stimulated by a tour of European art museums. Upon his return, he joined the SADC.
