Louis Khela Maqhubela was born in 1939 in Durban, Natal. Maqhubela moved with his family to Johannesburg in 1951. In 1957, while still at school, Maqhubela studied at Polly Street Art Centre. After leaving Orlando High School in Soweto in 1958, Maqhubela studied for a year under Cecil Skotnes and Sydney Kumalo at Jubilee Art Centre. He also received guidance from Giuseppe Cattaneo.
