Nicolaas Petrus van Wyk Louw was born on 11 June 1906 in Sutherland, where his father practised as an attorney. He started school there, but at the end of 1920 the Louw family moved to Cape Town, where Louw was educated at the South African College School and the University of Cape Town. He was awarded an MA degree in German in 1926, and after a year as a teacher in Steynsburg, also a BEd in 1929. In 1929 he was a temporary lecturer and from 1930 to 1949 a lecturer in education at the University of Cape Town.
