Pieter Voltelyn Graham van der Byl was the youngest of the four children of the wealthy farmer Pieter Voltelyn van der Byl, and his wife, Adelaide Taylor. Van der Byl was a direct descendant of Gerhard Pieterzoon van der Bijl who came to the Cape from the Netherlands in the 1660s. His branch of the family changed the spelling of their family name over the course of time and when the Cape came under British rule the van der Byls anglicized. Van der Byl thus had an English upbringing although he had full command of Afrikaans.
