1942

August 9, Gandhi is arrested in the early hours of the morning under the Defence of India Rules following the "Quit India" resolution and lodged in the Aga Khan Palace, Poona. Released unconditionally at 8 a. m. on May 6, 1944.

1943

February 10, Gandhi: (Aga Khan Palace). Three weeks' fast in detention. Started fast after first morning meal and broke it on March 3, at 9.34 a.m.

1947

September 1, Gandhi, started fast at 8.15 a.m. For Hindu-Muslim Unity. Broke fast at 9.15 p.m. on September 4.

1948

January 13, Gandhi, started fast after first meal. Broke fast on January 18 on written assurance given by leaders to maintain communal peace.

January 30, at an evening prayer Gandhi was approached by Godse who fired three shots into him. Gandhi died soon afterwards with his final words being “Hey....Raam” meaning oh God. His death marked a period of intense mourning followed by an escalation of violence between Pakistan and India.
