South African artist and master weaver Allina Ndebele, nee Khumalo, who returned to her father's village and established a small workshop to teach neighbourhood women to card, spin, dye and weave, was born at Ekuhlengeni mission on the Swart Mfolozi near Vryheid, Natal. On 27 September 2005, president Thabo Mbeki bestowed the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver on her for excellent contribution in the field of the creative arts.
